‘Workforce’ at 6/1 Told You So…

While I did give ‘Workforce’ as our only Derby selection, I am certainly not one to go overboard about any horse’s chances. You will never hear me say put your shirt, months pay or mortgage on a horse, all I will ever tell you is, from my own study, where I am putting my own money.

In the Derby ‘Workforce’ was totally awesome and plenty of accolades followed the horse’s record breaking performance, but there were plenty of pundits and tipsters giving confident advice about others horses in the race. There was certainly plenty of money for the unplaced favourite as the race itself got closer and he did not live up to expectations.

I must admit, I had no idea ‘Workforce’ and Ryan Moore were going to be able to pull off such a brilliant performance, but if you are interested here are my reasons for selecting the horse.

  1. The Dante is a very solid guide when trying to find The Derby Winner and the horse that won that race didn’t run in The Derby. The second placed horse was ‘Workforce’ and things did not quite go to plan for him in that race. The bit in the horse’s mouth had pulled through making it very difficult for the jockey to steer that day and it could have been a different story if that had not have happened.
  2. Ryan Moore won his first classic on the Friday in The Oaks and when interviewed after he was heard to say something along the lines of ‘..it’s not The Derby’. This told me of his real desire to win the big race but more importantly I assumed Ryan’s confidence would be sky high, which has to be a big help in such a race.
  3. ‘Workforce’ was running for Sir Michael Stoute and not only had he won the race four times previous but his horses were running well. He was certainly in-form when it mattered.
  4. The horse was unexposed compared to some other horses in the race. With just two previous runs to his name ‘Workforce’ was one of the horses that could improve significantly, and that combined with his good performance in The Dante, despite the problems, I thought the 6/1 was a worthwhile price.

I hope that gives you some idea of my thinking for The Derby and while it all makes good sense before the race, you can never really be so confident of a win that you’d put your last penny on it. Anything can happen in racing and it often does.

Today’s Tip – Combining proven knowledge, as in the clue in The Dante, with a top trainer and an in-form one at that along with a half decent price and you should at least get a good run for your money.

Next month the first Seminar will take place near to Chester. If you are interested in taking your racing to another level altogether then do let me know as soon as possible. Places on the Seminar are very limited.
