I’m taking on Camelot in the Derby with…

It’s Derby Day today and no better way to start the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations as far as I am concerned.

Aidan O’Brien’s ‘Camelot’ has been hyped so much that for some it is a foregone conclusion that he will win. And maybe he will win too but this is the world’s best known race in flat racing and most of the horses are in the race because they have proved they deserve a crack at it.

The price of 4/6 is just too short for me, why would you risk £6 to win £4? or any multiple of. Some might say it’s simply buying money and a massive amount more than you would ever get with a bank, but there are no certainties in racing.

‘Camelot’ may be a wonder horse, but he is not proved over this course, he is not proved at this distance and while his young jockey is extremely capable no doubt, he is young and still has a lot to learn.

Making profits in racing is about finding the value, it’s hard enough to find winners most of the time but if your winners don’t make you much you’ll probably still end up losing. Therefore I doing some dutching to take on the Derby favourite ‘Camelot’ with the following: –

Epsom 4.00
No.1 Astrology (8/1)
No.2 Bonfire (5/1)
No.4 Cavaleiro (66/1)
No.5 Main Sequence (10/1)

I would rather split £20 between these four horses and try to win a reasonable return than risking £20 to win £13 and pence.

Good luck
