Dutching – The Key to Consistent Profits or Not?

On the days when I picked just two horses to win and they both did, it doesn’t happen very often, I can sometimes be fooled into thinking that all is well with one point straight win bets and my future profits are assured. However, usually the very next day I am back down to earth when my 2nd or 3rd choice in the race romps in easily and my one point would be winner fails again.

Sometimes I do dutch my horses however, in fact quite often in my NAP race I will have two running for me this sometimes works out and other times it doesn’t, but on the whole I would generally prefer to have let’s say two win bets at 8/1 and 10/1 respectively rather than an each way bet on the 8/1 horse.

I say generally because every race is different and I do advise that every race should be looked at on its own merits. Sometimes if you only fancy one horse in a race and it happens to be 8/1 then maybe an each way bet is the best advice.

In today’s big race I felt that ‘Lillie Langtry’ was too short at the forecast 2/1 in such a competitive race, so I dutched three horses, one of them being ‘Music Show’ and she went on to win quite comfortably at 13/2. ‘Music Show’ is a horse I have put up on my service on two previous occasions (not today unfortunately) where she won once and lost the other and I felt she was worth sticking with today.

In races that are very competitive on paper Dutching (backing more than one horse in any given race) can be rewarding, especially if one of the less fancied horses wins at a big price as in the Sunley Criterio Stakes on the 26th of June where ‘Premio Loco’  won at 25/1.

This was a very competitive race and the favourite ‘Red Jazz’ went off at 13/8, ‘Mabait’ went off at 5/2 and ‘Doncaster Rover’ at 9/2. I didn’t fancy any of them at those prices, and ‘Premio Loco’ did have several positives in his favour and was definitely worth Dutching in with a couple of others. The horse was an even better proposition on Betfair where the SP was almost 45/1.

When you mention Dutching to some people they will say something like ‘only one horse can win the race so why back more than one?’ Of course that’s correct I will reply, ‘but which one?’

The bookmakers in effect back many more than one horse in a race and they are quite satisfied no doubt with a little bit of profit in the majority of all of the years races. Put simply the bookmakers could be said to be backing all of the horses bar the favourite and we already know favourites only win roughly 30% of the races so therefore the bookies are winning the other 70%.

In my opinion Dutching makes goos sense and with more horses running for you the losing runs should also be reduced. Whether you agree or disagree I would be very interested to hear your opinion, please feel free to email me.

Around 5 years ago I wrote a little system based on Non-Handicaps and Dutching, it is called The STAG Racing System. This system still works and will go on working if your are interested please let me know.

Today’s Tip – Instead of Laying a short priced favourite, (one that you do not fancy to win the race of course) why not try Dutching two or three of the opposition in the race. So instead of winning 1 point should you Lay the favourite and it lose, you might back three horses at 5/1, 7/1 and 10/1 for example and stand to win anywhere from 3 points to 8 points in profit. You also run the risk of losing the 3 points of course. So as with any other type of backing, take care and never bet with what you can’t afford to lose.
