Horse Racing Tips and Racing Systems That Work…At least some of the time anyway!

The Tony McCoy Grand National

After 14 previous attempts at winning The Grand National, Tony McCoy won the big race on ‘Don’t Push It’ as 10/1. If you are a real racing fan, I am sure like me you were delighted for him, even if I didn’t back the right horse I was filled with admiration for racing’s most successful ever jump jockey.

The Grand National has to be one of the very hardest races to try and find the winner, especially with so many tips and opinions flying around. I backed several horses in the race but this year, like last year with the 100/1 winner, I walked away a loser. To me the only clue that ‘Don’t Push It’ stood a better chance than expected by even Mr McCoy himself was the move in price from 25/1 to 10/1. Apart from that I did not fancy the horse’s chances, but that is The National.

There were plenty of statistics being offered about the race in the morning, one of the most popular ones was the weight carried by the winners in recent years. The stat suggested that the winner would be carrying less than 11 stone, and in recent years no horse had won carrying 11 stone or more. However on Saturday ‘Don’t Push It’ carried 11 stone 5lbs which was most certainly against the grain. It reminds me on a saying, ‘There’s lies, damn lies and statistics’.

Statistics do not and cannot work all of the time, although they can be a good place at which to start. In the National however, that particular stat did not work out and maybe it was simply the brilliance of Mr McCoy that defied the stat.

Today’s Tip – Racing statistics will not and cannot work out all of the time so it is maybe wise not to rely to heavily on them.  A statistic is a fact that is true before the event on which it is based on and is therefore subject to change after the particular event. Neil Davies 2010.
